Champagne - Marc Morizet

Rue du Carrouge 72, 51530 Cramant, France

House history

The site presents a brief history of champagne rather than a detailed history of the house. It indicates that vine cultivation in the region dates back to the tertiary period and that Julius Caesar contributed to its development during the Roman era. Champagne was initially a quality and fruity, non-sparkling wine, then in the 16th century became the wine of the great and the coronations. At the end of the 17th century, its ability to produce bubbles was discovered and implemented. The text cites 1670 as the date when Dom Pérignon, a monk at the Abbey of Hautvillers, shaped the production of champagne and introduced the use of the cork stopper. In the 18th century, champagne is presented as entering its glory, illustrated by a quote from Voltaire.
