House history
Champagne Houssart is a family operation now in its third generation. The estate is located in Chamery, in the heart of the Montagne de Reims, on the Champagne tourist route. Romain, the third generation and trained as an oenologist, places strong emphasis on tasting grapes, base wines, and champagnes to guide harvest timing, vinification, blending, ageing, and dosage. The vineyard covers nearly one hectare classified Premier Cru across about a dozen parcels, with vines averaging 35 years old and planted mainly to meunier, chardonnay, and a small proportion of pinot noir. The house states that it has owned its own press since the 1950s, and that it was fully renovated in 2013.
Tasting experience
The site highlights tasting as central to the estate’s work. Romain uses tasting of grape berries to organize the harvest, tasting of vins clairs to monitor vinifications and create blends, and tasting of champagnes in the cellar to determine optimal ageing and the most accurate dosage. The wines are aged for a long time on fine lees and made without malolactic fermentation. Reserve wines are aged in wood in demi-muids.
